How We Do it - reclaimed wood

Reclaimed Wood

AFTER 100 YEARS OR MORE OF SNOW, SUN & RAIN, THEY’RE READY

We focus on reclaimed wood from two sources: Reclaimed Wood from trees that have had centuries to grow and which were used in old barns built over 100 years ago; and newer vintage products, which have been reclaimed from old factories, mushroom facilities and old tobacco barns. From old dismantled barns, we salvage hand hewn beams, Wide Plank Flooring, and weathered siding. From our Vintage Reclaimed Wood line, we also produce flooring products and beams that are equally as beautiful.

If this reclaimed wood has been responsibly harvested, it can be used directly from the deconstruction site, which means accepting character marks, nails or nail holes, notches and the checks that have developed from being air-dried for so many years. These woods have a tighter grain, richer colors and are stronger and very unusual. Because of these characteristics, those individuals who purchase our product not only receive individual one of a kind boards, but they appreciate knowing that their wood is having a second use, therefore being environmentally responsible.

RECLAIMING WOOD - OUR PROCESS

  • Warehouse of reclaimed woodWe first collect the raw material (recycled wood) from barns, gristmills, wine vats, tobacco barns, and even bowling alleys which are brought to us from our demolition vendors. This material is stored in our 20,000 SF warehouse.
  • If the materials are hand hewn beams, they are stored in our yard. Our beams are of varying lengths from 8 feet to 30 feet. We also store pallets of reclaimed old brick from old brick factories and mills, along with reclaimed stone, acquired through the demolition process.
  • The next step before milling is to de-nail all the boards. This requires one warehouse employee to individually pull each nail and pass it through a scanner to insure every nail has been detected. This is a very arduous process.
  • Forklift - with load of reclaimed woodThen some of our stock is sent to the kiln. We dry our boards according to the specifications of the National Wood Flooring Association to less than 10% moisture. This is done for two reasons: it sterilizes the wood to kill any bugs that could have been collected, and it insures the stability of the product to lessen the shrinkage once the floor is laid. Our remaining lumber stock is air dried to a moisture content of 6-15% depending on the season.
  • Our reclaimed wood milling procedures on site includes sawing, brushing, sanding, Milling of reclaimed woodhand-planing and machine planing. We process our rough wood stock with small band saws that prevent unnecessary waste. For specialty milling, i.e., moulding, tongue and grooving, surfacing four sides, back relief, and defecting the product (to remove knot holes or other unwelcome characteristics), the wood is trucked to a larger mill near by.
  • Hand Selecting reclaimed woodAn employee then pulls the order for delivery. Then, just before delivery, we cover the wood by hand, in plastic and cardboard, and sometimes, if the wood is fragile, we pack it in crates to ensure protection during shipping and also to facilitate the handling at the job site.

We ship all over the US, Canada and Europe by FedEx freight or if the job site is within a radius of 200 miles, our driver will personally deliver the order and assist in unloading.
