Finishes

The original surface of antique wood will determine the final look
of the end product and is the most important characteristic of antique wood.

It is very important to preserve these surfaces and to enhance them with brushing, light sanding, hand planing and hand finishing with a tung oil or poly finish. Only with careful hand work can the original patina and authentic aged surface be retained. This is what makes our Signature flooring (three old original faces) and beams so beautiful.

Original old surfaces may be hand hewn, hand sawn, hand planed or machine finished. Most antique wood on the market today has been re-milled and the original surface has been lost.

But because of the many other beautiful characteristics of antique and vintage woods, re-milled wood can still be very appealing to most people. Our handcrafted vintage flooring and beams will, with our care and expertise, look similar to our original flooring, because they are reproduced in the same way as they were 100 years ago.
